Crews restore water to home of elderly Lincoln Park couple

The Fox 2 Problem Solvers get results! Water has been restored to the home of an elderly Lincoln Park couple forced to use snow for their bathing and plumbing needs.
The Fox 2 Problem Solvers get results for an elderly couple in Lincoln Park! Monday, we told you about Johanna and Stanley Laba. The 90 year olds have been bringing buckets of snow into their home, boiling it, and using the water to bathe and run their toilets. After our story aired, the city of Lincoln Park finally took action.
LINCOLN PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -

For many, this winter's heavy snow is becoming a source of frustration. But for 90-year-olds Stanley and Johanna Laba, the snow has become a source of life.

The couple has been using the snow for bathing and to keep their toilet running because their house in Lincoln Park has not had water for nearly two months now.

Stanley boils snow in pots on the stove, then carries the boiled water to the bathroom. They have a stash of bottled water in the basement for drinking, and a neighbor also fills up a jug with water and brings it over.

The couple says when they called the city for help, they were told no money was available to cover the cost of the repairs.

Dan Colbrith with Vaughn's Plumbing tried to help the couple for free, but the city had previously come and shut the water off so repairs could be made. Colbrith believes the city is responsible for the repairs, but the city says the homeowners need to hire someone themselves.

FOX 2's Robin Schwartz inquired with City Hall and the Department of Public Services, and both were aware the Labas were without water. The city manager insists the issue is not the city's responsibility.

UPDATE: At the City Council meeting Monday night, several residents shared concerns over the couple's lack of running water.

City Council leaders say the water foreman supervisor went to speak with the family about getting their water working, even though it appears the problem is not with the city. The line from the couple's house to the street appears to be frozen.

Leaders say they wish they knew about the couple's problem sooner so they could have worked to expedite the help. They also urge anyone with other piping or water issues to contact the Council.
