Protestors gather outside in week 2 of gay marriage trial

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

A trial that could overturn Michigan's ban on gay marriage drew crowds of protestors on both sides again Monday. As many as 600 demonstrators were said to be expected outside federal court Monday, but a crowd of less than 100 was there.

Dozens of people from various equality groups and churches from around the region marched, once again, peacefully side-by-side. FOX 2's Robin Murdoch was there.

Same-sex marriage has been banned in Michigan since 2004 when voters approved the move by some 59 percent. Now, two local nurses, April DeBoer and Jayne Rowse, are challenging the state's definition of marriage to be legally able to jointly adopt their three children.

Monday the trial entered its second week. A judge barred one of the witnesses for the Michigan attorney general's office.

The trial is expected to wrap up by the end of the week.
