PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Just over two dozen valley pups, chihuahuas left Phoenix this morning crossing the country to find new homes. Maricopa County Animal Care & Control partnered with an agency in Pennsylvania to make it happen.

Sparkle is one of 25 chihuahuas who embarked on an exciting journey all the way to Pennsylvania where according to the spokesperson for Maricopa County Animal Care & Control Melissa Gable there's a shortage of small dogs there.

"They heard in Arizona we have an issue with tons of chihuahuas and tons of pit-bull's, where they are they don't have that many chihuahua's," said Gable.

Helen Brillakis with the Arizona Chihuahua Rescue worked with animal control and Paws to Heart to make the relocation happen.

Each dog was loaded into a crate, the crates were then placed into a van that headed east this afternoon, the journey saving more than those on board.

"For these 25 dogs it makes all the difference in the world and hopefully give more breathing room to the dogs that are in there," said Brillakis.

The final destination for these pups Bensalem, Pennsylvania is 2,400 miles away. Once they reach Pennsylvania the chihuahuas will either go to foster or forever homes.

"If they've got homes back east where they can be placed then by all means its best for the dog we're willing to work with them," said gable.

With an overabundance of chihuahuas here in the valley this is a partnership the county and local rescues hope to continue.

Maricopa County Animal Control spayed and neutered the dogs at no charge and waived all adoption fees.
