CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

How much homework are teachers really assigning their students these days?

A national survey, conducted by the University of Phoenix took a look at recent homework trends.

It found that 9th through 12th grade teachers assign an average of 3 1/2 hours of homework each week, resulting in 17 1/2 hours of homework per week.

Sixth through 8th grade teachers assign an average of 3.2 hours per week while kindergarten through 5th grade teachers assign an average of 2.9 hours of homework per week.

Teachers say homework can help teachers see how well students understand lessons and give parents a chance to see what's being learned in school.
