DETROIT -

One person has died in a horrific accident involving a single vehicle on Detroit's east side.

Police say the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when the vehicle hit a tree, split in half and burst into flames on East Outer Drive near Chamlers Street around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Fire crews were called to the scene.

The circumstances leading up to the crash were not released.

The victim's identity is still unknown at this time, but examiners have determined the victim is a male.

The vehicle involved in the crash did not have a license plate and the vehicle identification number had been removed. The victim was not carrying identification.

A source in the medical examiners office tells FOX 2's Maurielle Lue the victim was so severely burned the examiner will have to wait for family to come forward with dental records so the victim's teeth can be cross referenced in the database.
