VIDEO: Sea lion, boy with Asperger's bond at DC zoo

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON - Video shot by a Virginia mom during her family's recent visit to the Smithsonian's National Zoo in D.C. is sure to touch your heart.  Jennifer Bittner tells FOX 5 her 7-year-old son, who has Asperger's Syndrome, found an unexpected playmate inside the zoo's sea lion exhibit.

Bittner says she and her family were the only ones inside the sea lion exhibit last Sunday morning.  They arrived early before the rest of the crowds.

In the video, her son Alex is seen running back and forth in front of the aquarium's giant window as a sea lion named Sophie closely follows him.  Bittner was rolling during the whole thing, as the sea lion followed her son as he ran from right to left-- and stopped when he stopped.

In an email, Bittner told FOX 5 the two played happily for several minutes.

"It was amazing to witness the connection that the beautiful creature and my son seemed to share," she wrote.  "He sometimes has trouble interacting and playing with children his own age, but he and the Sea Lion seemed perfectly in sync."

She says watching them play was an incredible experience, and from the sound of things, Alex felt the same way.

"This is the best thing of my life!" the little boy is heard saying in the video, which is posted on YouTube.
