Police Crack Down On Off Campus Street Robberies Near Temple Univ.

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Young People are on edge near the temple university campus after a string of robberies. In many cases, investigators say one thing in particular could be grabbing the robbers' attention.

Temple students Ian Borden and Max Schryver know all about crime on the streets surrounding the university's Broad Street campus. They were held up at gun point a few blocks from their off campus homes.

"We thought he was just approaching us, he points a gun to my friends head," Schryver told FOX 29. "He just pulls a gun out, throws me up against a car,"

"We're just easy targets," Borden said.

"I lost my phone, my wallet, all my cash and stuff, my credit card," Schryver added.

Philadelphia Police say strong armed robberies and gun point stickups in the neighborhoods around the campus are on the rise.

"We've had an uptick since the beginning of the year, a lot more than usual," said Captain Roland Lee of the 22nd District near Temple.

Captain Lee says the robbers' are targeting young people with cell phones, more than 15 robberies in the past month from Dauphin to Master and 12th to 20th Streets. Philadelphia and Temple police are now pooling their resources to blanket those areas with more officers.

"More manpower in more places," Lee said. "It's not just Temple students being victimized, but people in the community being victimized also."

"There's so many police, in cars on bikes, but it always seems like they miss the attacks," Borden said.

Allie Gertz and Meredith Getzfread have friends who've had cell phones stolen here. They say there's lots of police around, but the bad guys still strike.

"I think they're opportunists so they don't see a cop around, grab a phone, see a cop around, don't do it," Gertz said.

"It's scary, I kind of keep a look out. Luckily nothing happened to me personally," another student said.

"It doesn't matter if you're in groups, they'll go after anybody," Borden said.

Police are using Temple's wide array surveillance cameras and private security cameras in these areas to track the robbers. They're also trying not to overlap patrol areas so they can cover more ground in this latest crackdown.
