South Mountain YMCA closing due to enrollment drop

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Community members in South Phoenix rallied Monday night -- upset about the closure of the South Mountain YMCA.

Membership at that location has been dropping the past few years for two reasons.

One: There's an L.A. Fitness that opened along Baseline Road and Two: It's just north of the YMCA and offers programs for both kids and adults.

Community leaders and people living in the area met to protest plans to permanently close the branch.  They wanted questions answered on why YMCA leaders were being so secretive about the closing and if the community would be given a chance to try and save the location.

News of the closure hit some members pretty hard.

"Yes, a member for 10 years.. very disappointing.  In fact, I got a little emotional when I was leaving," said Henry Garcia.

The YMCA South Mountain branch has been open since 1995.

Video: FOX 10's Jill Monier spoke to residents about the closure, which is pretty much a done deal.
