Angelo Henderson, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, dies at 51

Angelo B. Henderson, a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist and local radio host, died Saturday of natural causes.  He was 51.

Henderson graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1985, with a Bachelor's degree in journalism and was inducted into the University of Kentucky Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame in 2005.

Most recently, Henderson hosted "Your Voice with Angelo Henderson" on Newstalk AM 1200 and 99.9FM at Radio One Detroit. 

According to his website, he is the only African-American reporter to win a Pulitzer Prize at the Wall Street Journal, where he wrote and served as Detroit deputy bureau chief.

Henderson was an active member of the local community.  In 2011, he was named the director of community affairs for Triumph Church, which has Sunday services in Detroit, Southfield, and Canton. 

He was also a member of the Detroit Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (DC-NABJ), where he served as chapter president for two terms.

"He's someone I looked up to," said Alex Kimbrough, current DC-NABJ President, "It is such a major blow to our community and major blow to our profession and we are deeply, deeply saddened by his loss."

He is survived by his wife Felecia and their son Grant.

A public viewing is Saturday, February 22, 2014 from 12:00 noon - 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, February 23, from 12:00 noon - 8:00 p.m.

A family hour will be held before the funeral service Monday, February 24, beginning at 10 a.m.

The funeral will take place at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit beginning at 11 a.m.
