Painful Memory Motivates Woman To Make Prom Dress Drive

Northeast Philadelphia -

A painful memory has motivated a local woman to make a difference. She's getting national attention in her quest to make sure history doesn't repeat itself for local teens.

What looks like a bridal gown boutique is actually a chiropractic and rehabilitative center in Northeast Philadelphia

It's where 19-year-old Rachel Malampy works but her office is also the backdrop for her charity prom dress drive.

"I didn't go to prom and I don't want girls not to be able to go to prom either because they can't afford a dress or a prom ticket, " Malampy said.

Two years ago as a senior at Archbishop Ryan High School , Malampy had purchased her dream gown.

She then found out she wouldn't be able to wear it. Financially tough times forced her to sit out her senior prom.

"It took a whole lot out of me," she said.

But she has since bounced back and her heart is bigger than ever. Malampy is determined to help other girls with similar financial strains get the dress of their dreams.

"It's every girl's dream to go to prom they like get their hair done and make up done they want to get beautiful in the perfect prom dress," Malampy said.

Malampy launched a Prom Dress Drive. The donated gowns will be given to girls in our area who need them most.

Within just two weeks of the prom dress drive, Rachel had received dresses by the carloads -- some -- like this one from as far away as Arizona.

"It really means a lot to me that a lot of people are actually coming out and supporting me," Malampy said.

Malampy's goal is to collect 100 dresses by March 29. She's been wearing her beloved gown around the office to raise awareness for her cause.

She says the void she feels for missing out on her senior prom will be filled by the smiles on these girls faces after helping them snag some prized prom swag.

It's going to make me feel really good that someone else can wear this dress," Malampy said.

If you'd like to nominate a girl to receive a prom dress or donate dresses to Rachel Malampy's Prom Dress Drive, call Rachel or Deneen McCaffery at 215-637-1212.
