Prosecutors clear Mohave deputy in fatal shooting

Posted: Updated:

KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) - Prosecutors say a Mohave County sheriff's deputy acted appropriately when he fatally shot an unarmed but combative Kingman man last year.

The Apache County Attorney's Office cleared Deputy Jace Reif in the Aug. 16 shooting of Blake Allen Barbour.

Reif shot Barbour after the deputy responded to a domestic violence call. Barbour refused the deputy's commands, shook off hits from a stun gun, threw a chair at Reif and took the deputy's baton away from him.

Barbour's mother had reported that her son was acting crazy and had prevented her from calling 911 earlier by holding her by the neck.

An autopsy reported that multiple bullets struck Barbour in the chest, abdomen and limbs. A toxicology report indicted Barbour didn't have drugs or alcohol in his system.
