Aggressive flu strain kills Phoenix attorney, family encourages everyone to get vaccinated

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

If there's one thing Javier Sedillo's family wants the public to take away from their loss, it's the importance of getting the flu shot.

The State of Arizona doesn't track the number of adults who die from the flu, but according to the Arizona Department of Health Services, the group with the most flu cases are people ages 19 to 49. The virus is not only claiming the lives of elderly people and infants, but relatively healthy people like Javier Sedillo are dying from the flu.

Javier Sedillo was a father, a husband, and a man with a passion for justice. He died from the flu at just 38 years-old.

"It is a tragedy, it is a shock, I don't think people can rationalize how something like this can happen," said Isaac Cordova, Sedillo's cousin.

Sedillo earned his law degree from Arizona State University. He first became a City of Phoenix prosecutor then turned to representing people, many cast aside by society, as a defense lawyer.

"He was a firm believer that people always had a good side to them," said Cordova.

The Arizona legal community remembers him as a man with a bright future and big heart. His family said Sedillo would have survived if only he had gotten the flu shot. "I wouldn't have gotten the flu shot for myself if this didn't happen I think a lot of his family members wouldn't have done it either," said Cordova.

"Those of us who work in systems with people that are in distress, I would just encourage them all to take prudent steps to take the vaccination. We've just had too many deaths in Arizona from the flu," said Hon. Chris McBride.

An aggressive H1N1 strain has hit younger adults more severely this year.

"He had the capability of making all he contacted happy and it was a gift that he had and one he shared with all of us," said Cordova.
