CTA train derailment at Howard halted service Friday

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Zara Zhuang's 40-minute CTA commute to Evanston turned into a four hour-plus fiasco.

The 26-year-old Northwestern University student attempted to board a Purple Line train at Adams and Wabash around 6:20 p.m., but was told by a conductor that she had to find another way home.

The conductor was referring to a derailed Purple Line train and a power outage at the Howard rail yard that caused delays on multiple train lines Friday evening and halted some trains – like Zhuang's - altogether.

"I've been keeping myself entertained with the CTA rage on Twitter," she said. "That kind of helped."

The incident started when a northbound Purple Line train leaving the Howard station about 6:05 p.m. experienced a "minor derailment," according to CTA spokeswoman Catherine Hosinski. She said no injuries were reported in the derailment.

Train service was temporarily suspended in both directions, although normal service had resumed on the Purple Line as of about 9:15 p.m., Hosinski said.

Meanwhile, Yellow Line service remains suspended in both directions as of 10 p.m.

A power outage at the Howard rail yard about 4:55 p.m. also contributed to delays Friday evening, Hosinski said. Backup generators were brought in to operate rail switches, and Hosinski could not immediately say whether power had been fully restored at the station as of 9:15 p.m.

Yet for Zhuang, the Purple Line derailment was an unexpected delay. Zhuang said she boarded the Red Line train headed toward Howard at approximately 7:20 p.m. More than two hours later, she reached her destination at Howard, where she was able to board a Purple Line train to her home in Evanston.

"I just boarded the Purple Line train," she said about 10 p.m.. "I just wished I brought some books to keep me busy."
