Dearborn firefighters' Hockey Fights Cancer Night Feb. 9

(WJBK) -

Dearborn firefighter Mike Mattern is used to life or death situations, but just recently he watched a loved one fight leukemia - and win, thanks to a blood donor. Mike loves helping others and playing hockey so he decided to bring those two passions together, and put together Hockey Fights Cancer Night.

The game will raise money for the Josephine Ford Cancer Institute and Be The Match, which pairs donors with blood cancer patients who can only survive with a bone marrow transplant.

"It's a chance to not only show up and see a pretty good hockey game, but also you may be the person that saves someone's life," says Mattern.

Be The Match representatives will be at the game to help you complete simple cheek swab to register potential donors.

"We're reaching out to the community to find people from any, all ethic backgrounds to save a life, and the first step is joining the registry with a cheek swab sample," says Tarita Gibson from Be The Match.

Cancer survivors and their families will be honored during the game.

Hockey Fights Cancer Night is happening Sunday, Feb. 9 at 4 p.m. at the Dearborn Ice Skating Center on Ford Road. Admission is a monetary donation.

Dearborn firefighters will take on the Western-Wayne Fire Hockey Club beginning at 4:30 p.m.
