GLENDALE, Ariz. -

A man is shot and killed in front of a group of shoppers in Glendale Thursday morning.

Undercover Glendale Police officers tried to arrest a man in a parking lot for an outstanding warrant near 59th Ave. & Thunderbird. They say he was wanted for another crime, and the Glendale officer involved in the shooting has been placed on a paid administrative leave which is standard in these cases.

A witness saw this happen and pulled out a cell phone and recorded the whole thing. FOX10 talked with the man who said he was walking out of the Safeway grocery store when he heard gunshots and saw the smoke everywhere. Instead of running, he took out his cell phone and he hit record.

"It was fearful, I mean everyone was fearful, this guy was ducking behind his car if you watch," described Roger Pippins.

Loud gunshots and smoke everywhere, bystanders captured the frightening scene on their cell phones.

"This is real, this is live, this is actually happening right in front of my face," said Roger.

At first Roger Pippins and his girlfriend weren't sure what was happening in the Glendale shopping center or who was shooting. "You didn't know it was the police taking care of it at first... You thought, what is going on? a bad drug deal or what, we had assumptions," said roger.

Then they saw a police uniform, "that is the police, dude," said Roger's girlfriend.

As the smoke faded in the video, law enforcement officials had surrounded the truck, the suspect inside, with police officers yelling at the suspect. "You thought it was over and then you hear another barrage of fire, then you hear "target is moving" then you hear a couple more shots and then another shot," said Roger.

He says even though he and his girlfriend were scared they started shooting for evidence and anything that went wrong. "If they were prowling this guy, or watching him for a while, don't take him out in the parking lot... take him out somewhere," said Roger.

Glendale Police say they had to shoot because they felt threatened, they say the investigation is ongoing.
