PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

A lot of people have the flu right now and there are the typical over the counter medications you can take, but what about something a little more natural.

It is flu season a time we probably all dread and taking some of those pain medications doesn't seem so appealing but there are natural options.

"We have our kiwis, peppers, some juice guava, but any citrus fruit is going to contain vitamin C and we need that daily consumption of vitamin C because our body doesn't produce it," said Dr. Robb Bird with the Transform You Weight Loss Clinic.

Those foods will help you protect your body from the flu. If you're already struggling with the flu try taking sesame seeds. "Sesame seeds, those are a fantastic little seeds that provide zinc in it and then back into your fruits and vegetables and will give you those vitamin C's those vitamin B's and D's," said Dr. Bird.

"Aloe water, it's good for helping us get over a flu or a sickness and its great for anti-inflammatory," said Dr. Bird.

A few things to help you recover and keep you healthy. Doctor bird says adding pumpkin into dishes also helps boost immunity and you can make it simple and cook up some pumpkin pancakes.
