PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

The Phoenix Art Museum just opened a new exhibition called "Lifelike," featuring everyday objects, like a trash bag, a dumpster and a 1970s-inspired kitchen.

So why is that art?

As it turns out, those objects aren't so ordinary when you check them out up close.

Lifelike is an exhibition from the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. It's been traveling the country and Phoenix is its last stop.

It's built around the concept that things are not always what they seem.  It plays with your perceptions.

What looks like a white trash bag on the floor is actually a marble sculpture that weighs 800 pounds.

A huge piece of cardboard, but it's made of bronze.

A suitcase, but it's a wooden shell.

A piece of plywood, but it's a painting.

What's real, who's real?  It's hard to tell.

"Artists who are taking very ordinary objects and transforming them by hand into something that is quite extraordinary," said Siri Engberg.

Lifelike rushes you forward in time.  With a video of good fruit going bad, then it blasts you back into the past.

Check out the circa 1970s kitchen. It has a lot of earth tones in there, but actually it is a mockup in the middle of this huge gallery.

Upstairs, the rest of the exhibition has miniatures.

A heavy metal dumpster -- but no, it's not.  A subway car that isn't.  It's relentless.  Every artwork tricks your eye and bends your mind.

Lifelike will be at the Phoenix Art Museum until May 18th.
