Police, fire crews help catch runaway steer in south Phoenix

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

It wasn't a typical day in the neighborhood -- a steer broke out of his pen and went for a joy run in south Phoenix.

Firefighters and police officers used their vehicles to corner the steer, but catching the big guy was no easy task.

"Saw all the police cars.. I was wondering what was wrong.. I saw the fire truck and I noticed it was a steer running in the street," said Ramon Pimental.

That's right -- a steer.  No one called it in, but firefighters came in to try and rope him in -- right in the middle of the neighborhood near 7th Avenue and Broadway.  It's a horse property.

The owner of the steer wasn't sure how he got out, but Pimental says he was moving pretty good on his property.

"Gate was open.. came in the yard and now they're going to pick it up.. there's a trailer there. It jumped the fence and went across the street and they tried to hold it there until someone came and got it," he said.

Folks with ropes in hand, along with Phoenix police and firefighters all helped to steer the animal in the right direction without anyone getting hurt.
