These foods get you in the mood

From celery to hot chilies, many people have superstitions about what helps set the mood and give them a boost in the bedroom.

We recently headed to Centro Ybor to survey some of the most popular aphrodisiacs. Some of the most common replies included proteins like steak, oysters, and other shellfish.

"As with any good thing, everything in moderation," explained Dr. Dae Sheridan, a University of South Florida professor and clinical sexologist. "Meats are known to raise testosterone. It is the hormone responsible for libido in men and women."

We met Dr. Sheridan at Sanwa Farmer's Market in Tampa. We went shopping for superfoods that double as sex boosters.

When choosing a cut of meat for a romantic evening, Sheridan recommends choosing a leaner option, "so you're going to have less fullness and gluttony."

It's not just steak. Sheridan says some believe liver should be on the menu.

It's often prepared as the French dish foie gras, and is something that is more of a one-time, out-to-dinner treat. The texture of the liver, in addition to the extra indulgence and luxury, is known to be an aphrodisiac as well.

"Oysters, which are a well-known aphrodisiacs not only for their texture, but they have high levels of zinc and magnesium and they also raise your dopamine so you get excited when you eat them," Sheridan continued.

While some foods produce either a physical or mental response, creatures from the sea have the capability to do both.

"Salmon increases serotonin. It's known as a mood booster, also heart healthy, which can help with blood flow," she added.
