SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

Scottsdale Police want to make sure everyone out there stays safe when at the Phoenix Open. They are conducting DUI checks at the gate at the TPC.

There are a lot of drunk people out here. Tens of thousands of people drinking and as they exit the event, there are about six law enforcement agencies including Gilbert Police, DPS, MCSO, and Scottsdale Police that are giving free breathalyzer tests to help people learn how impaired they are.

"We actually have a lot of people that think they are okay to drive and once we show them the results they get a cab out of here saving numerous lives and people from getting a DUI two miles down the road," said Officer Adam Dyas with the Gilbert Police Department.

A DPS officer tested one woman attending the event telling her "You would be going with me to jail if I stopped you," which shocked her as she told FOX10 she felt fine.

"Out of the 2,200 people that we tested yesterday, 79 of the people were over a .08, though in their minds they were okay to drive a motor vehicle," said Sgt. Tom Jensen with the Scottsdale Police Department.

Police say they plan to give 4,000 breathalyzer tests at the event over the weekend and that's all an effort to make sure they don't have to give DUIs later down the road. Officers expect they will arrest 60 people for DUI over the weekend and they say this is helping curb those DUIs.
