Super Bowl Boulevard: 200 security cameras

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

As part of the security measures in place for the Super Bowl events and festivities, 200 cameras will blanket 13 blocks from 34th Street to 47th Street on Broadway in Manhattan. The temporary cameras add to a system of thousands of permanent cameras covering the city. The NYPD monitors them from a command center in lower Manhattan.

The department has software that can program the cameras to detect suspicious activity, such as a bag or other objects left for a long time.

The NYPD also will take lower-tech measures similar to those taken for New Year's Eve, when hundreds of extra uniformed and plainclothes officers in Midtown and elsewhere will mix with the crowd. Hazmat and bomb squads will also be on standby.

After the bombing at the Boston Marathon, New York officials added security cameras to the finish line of the New York City Marathon, a move they are now mimicking for the Super Bowl-related activities.

Security experts say for the relatively small amount surveillance cameras cost, they can provide a strong dense for visitors here for the big game.
