Cass Tech QB Jayru Campbell released from custody, charges still pending

(WJBK) -

Star Cass Tech quarterback Jayru Campbell is now out of custody, but not necessarily out of hot water.

The 17-year-old junior, who is allegedly shown in video body slamming a school security guard, was released from Detroit's detention center Friday evening. The case is still under review to determine charges. A Detroit Public School official had said Campbell could face assault and battery charges.

Jayru's father, Shawn Campbell, picked him up from Detroit's detention center Friday night. No one came to the door, though, when FOX 2's Randy Wimbley tried to reach the family for comment.

Supporters say a different video of the incident, shown from another angle, shows the security guard instigating the confrontation and that Campbell was defending himself.
