Bashara thanks judge for recognizing death anniversary of his 'wonderful' wife

Friday marks the two-year anniversary of Jane Bashara's murder. Her husband has still not gone on trial, and the delays keep coming.

"I want to thank you very much for recognizing the second anniversary of my wife's passing," Bashara said in court Thursday to Judge Vonda Evans. He's charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jane, who was beaten and strangled at the couple's Grosse Pointe Park home in January 2012.

"And I just want to say that, um, please everyone - don't forget her. She was a wonderful gal," he continued.

Bashara is scheduled to go on trial in March but each court hearing presents new challenges and delays. On Thursday, an angry Judge Evans admonished the prosecution for seeking a search warrant last year from another judge when the case was before her.

But prosecutors weren't the only ones in hot seat.

The judge is still trying to determine if she will replace the defense team from the legal defenders office. She has voiced concerns the office doesn't have enough resources for the case, which consists of 300 witnesses and more than 10 thousand documents.

"I'm just concerned that, maybe, at this point, the representation here, or the lack of resources, is going to not provide the defendant with the type of representation and council that he deserves," Judge Evans said.

Defense attorneys say they can handle it. Meanwhile, prosecutors are concerned a new defense team will mean major delays.

The judge indicated she has court approval to spend up to $200,000 of taxpayer money to bolster Bashara's defense team.

She will make her decision on February 18th.
