TONOPAH, Ariz. -

Twenty-four people were taken to hospitals after a passenger allegedly attacked the driver of a Greyhound bus on eastbound I-10 near Burnt Well rest area, west of Tonopah.

The bus was headed from Los Angeles to Phoenix and was expected to arrive at the Greyhound bus station at 24th Street and Buckeye Road at 3:45 a.m.

Arizona Department of Public Safety says 25-year-old Maquel Donyel Morris appeared to be high on drugs when he became angry, attacked the bus driver and tried to grab the steering wheel around 2 a.m. Passengers were able to help the driver and stop the bus before it went into oncoming traffic.

I knew that once he hit that median that was no way we were going to come out of this, but [the bus driver] held on to it to a T, even with a guy hitting him, said Gregory Fort, a passenger.

Once the bus stopped, Cook says Morris and his girlfriend immediately ran into the desert, but returned 30 minutes later and were arrested.

Some passengers were injured when they were ejected from their seats.

Three people were airlifted. One was a passenger who helped subdue the suspect, one person has fractures to their lower body and one has a back injury.

21 more people were taken by ambulance to hospitals. The driver was reportedly taken to the hospital, but their condition isn't known.

A relief bus picked up the remaining passengers and is on the way back to Phoenix. A total of 46 people were on the bus at the time of the crash.

"I'm just thankful I'm alive. I really thought I was going to die," said Chrissy Sanchez, a passenger.

Morris will likely face 48 counts of endangerment, 24 counts of assault and three counts of aggravated assault.

He is being treated for drug issues a county hospital and will be booked afterward.

DPS says Morris' final destination was supposed to be in Texas.
