Several Suspects at Large After Fatal Beating of Woman

Posted: Updated:
Santa Ana, CA -

(FOX 11 / AP) Authorities say a woman who was beaten unconscious by five people outside an Orange County nightclub has died.

Santa Ana police tell City News Service that Annie "Kim" Pham of Westminster was removed from life support and died shortly after 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Authorities say the 23-year-old Chapman University graduate was outside The Crosby nightclub with friends shortly before 12:30 a.m. Saturday when they got into an argument with another group. Pham was beaten and left unconscious on the sidewalk.

A Santa Ana woman was arrested Monday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon but police haven't released her name. Investigators are looking for two more women and two men, all in their 20s.

(FOX11/CNS) - The woman who was beaten into unconsciousness outside a Santa Ana nightclub was a psychology graduate, aspiring writer and part-time fundraiser for breast cancer awareness, it was reported today.

The 23-year-old victim, identified by relatives as Kim Pham, remains on life support after the attack outside The Crosby Bar and Nightclub in the 400 block of North Broadway in downtown Santa Ana around 12.20 a.m. Saturday.

According to police, the woman was waiting to enter the nightclub with her friends when an argument began with another group of patrons. The argument escalated into a fight, which left the woman severely beaten, police said.

Patrol officers responding to the scene found the woman on the sidewalk, and she appeared to be unconscious, police said.

News media outlets reported that the victim's sister, Katie Nguyen, described her as having "passed away on Sunday'' while her body remained on life support.

Santa Ana Police have arrested one suspect, who they described as a woman in her 20s, for the attack, but four others, two men and two women, are considered suspects and remain at large.

The Orange County Register reported that the victim graduated from Chapman University in 2013 with a psychology degree and had worked in her spare time to raise awareness of and funds for breast cancer research.

The victim also had an essay entitled "Men Don't Talk About Their Feelings'' published in a 2011 anthology.

Santa Ana councilwoman Michele Martinez, who represents the city's Ward 2, said she planned to ask the city to re-consider the introduction of surveillance cameras in the historic downtown precinct, according to the news media.

The council had previously discussed the issue in 2010 after a shooting in an underground garage but shelved it for lack of funding. Downtown Inc., a coalition of downtown Santa Ana businesses, offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the perpetrators, Bertagna said.

Police asked any witnesses to come forward, particularly if they took any cell phone video of the brawl. Anyone with information was asked to call police at (714) 245-8390.

A memorial of candles and flowers was continuing to grow outside the nightclub.
