Chicago named worst city for bedbugs

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

There are a number of reasons why Chicago remains America's bedbug capital for the second year running.

It's certainly a title we'd rather do without.

Euros Roundtree is one of thousands of Chicago residents who's done the bedbug battle.

The 76 year old retiree lives in this YMCA residential building in the south side Roseland neighborhood, and two years ago was forced to throw out furniture to get rid of the pesky bloodsuckers.

On Thursday the pest control company Orkin ranked Chicago as having the worst bedbug problem in the United States for the second year running, putting Chicago ahead of Los Angeles, Columbus and Detroit.

The rankings are based on the number of bedbug calls to the company's exterminators.

Experts say part of the problem lies in Chicago's role as a transportation capital.

With so many people coming and going by planes, trains, buses and other forms of public transportation, the bedbugs are easily able to hop a ride and colonize...

"The problem is definitely citywide. it's not in one neighborhood, it's all over," Health Homes organizer, Megan Borneman said.

Megan Borneman is a Healthy Homes organizer for the Chicago Metropolitan Tenants Organization, and investigates bedbug infestations in rental properties.

She says in 2011 the organization received 362 calls to its hotline for bedbug problems.

In 2012 that shot up to 578 calls, and increased again last year to 759 calls for help.
