Ambulance delays in mall carjacking shooting

It took first responders at least 18 minutes to reach a carjacking victim who was shot in the parking lot of a New Jersey mall.

A mall security officer called for help within a minute of the shooting but the height of the parking garage entrance apparently stalled the ambulance crew from reaching the dying victim, Dustin Friedland.

Friedland was shot on an upper level of a parking deck at the Mall at Short Hills when he refused to hand over the keys to his car, with his wife inside.

His wife made multiple 911 calls after the shooting.

In one, Jamie Friedland says, "Yes, this is an emergency. I'm in the Short Hills Mall parking lot. My husband has been shot. We called the ambulance about half and hour ago. Where is it?"

Millburn Police confirm that it took 18 minutes for the ambulance to reach the scene. A stretcher was eventually rolled up the ramp to the shooting scene.

The mall's general manager and security director tell Fox 5 that two of the mall security officers, who are trained EMTs, were on patrol one level below the shooting and reached the scene less than a minute after hearing the first shot.

The Millburn police chief was meeting with town attorneys on Tuesday and was not available for comment. A representative with the Short Hills-Millburn Volunteer Ambulance Corps says he could not comment because of the ongoing investigation.

Four men are charged in connection with the crime. All have pleaded not guilty.
