Put down the weights, pick up the drum sticks and get ready to pound it out! The first "Pound" classes in the Bay area just kicked off at Soul Rooster dance workout studio at Britton Plaza in Tampa.
"It's kinda like Pilates and drumming and jamming rock out work out," said Roma Starkey, 55, who loves the workout trend.
"Pound is cardio meets concert," explained Soul Rooster owner Tiffany Meeks.
"And who doesn't wanna be a rock star? Everyone wants to be a rock star," Starkey added.
Amy Rumore, 29, also loved attending the class.
"From the second that the lights turn down, the music turned on and we started hitting the sticks, I knew I was in for a workout," she said.
Meeks said it is a workout that has results, adding "You can burn up to 800 calories in 45 minutes."
The beat makes doing squats, lunges and core exercises seem more fun.
"They give you something to kinda play with, so it's kinda like rockin' on the drums," said one student.
"This is definitely, for the lower body, the best workout I've had in a long time," said another student who was trying the workout for the first time.
Pounding it out equals sweating it out, and that all adds up to results you can feel.
"I'm definitely gonna be taking the elevator tomorrow instead of the stairs at work," another student laughed.
Meeks says the trick is in the sticks.
"It's the only workout where you can actually auditorially hear yourself releasing and working out," she said.
The beat drives competition and helps release stress.
However, in the shadow of so many work out trends, will this new twist on fitness last?
"I think that it's a fitness craze that's here to stay," Meeks said.
