Peoria woman burned in home explosion shares her story

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Despite all that she's been through Tiara Del Rio is very optimistic.

"Knowing today that I can actually walk is just a miracle cause I didn't know if I was going to survive or not" said Tiara Del Rio.

Back in October Del Rio and her boyfriend Beau Zimbro were at her Peoria home and she lit a candle.

She recalled what happened next, "Instead of lighting the candle it blew up in my face".

Authorities blamed a gas line that was damaged during some construction for the explosion. Del Rio was left with burns on more than 50 percent of her body.

"I had burns all over my legs, my hands, they were pretty much gone because the skin was peeled off" said Del Rio.

Del Rio has been at the burn center at Maricopa Medical Center since the explosion. Tomorrow she is expected to leave the hospital for a rehabilitation facility.

"I saw my pictures for the first time of what I looked like before and what I look like now... I am very grateful for the doctors and this hospital" said Del Rio.

The doctors used an experimental treatment on her that worked well. Using her skin cells, doctors created a spray that helps replace burned skin. They also used medical grade pure honey on her face. It sounds unbelievable but her doctor says it works great.

"It doesn't look perfect right now but a year from now you are to be hard pressed to know that she was ever burned on her face" said Doctor Kevin Foster with the Arizona Burn Center.

Del Rio still has to wear compression garments to help reduce scarring. She says she's ready for the next chapter.

"It was a lot of crying but it got me to where I am today, but I am really grateful for what I have been through these past few months" said Del Rio.
