Surveillance Shows SUV Plunging Off Overpass

Posted: Updated:
LITTLE CANADA, MN -

A pickup truck skids off an icy Minnesota highway and plunges into a frozen pond. And the entire incident is caught on camera! Luckily, the driver survived.

You almost don't believe your eyes when you watch surveillance of the 35-E North Overpass above I-694 in Little Canada.

The video shows a pick-up truck slamming into the concrete barrier and going airborne during the morning rush.

The 2001 Ford Ranger plummets more than 50 feet onto a frozen pond below and gets absolutely mangled.

Yet somehow, the driver, 54-year old Anne Spiess of Maplewood, survived.

The state patrol reported that the roadway was icy on Tuesday morning, but was it the culprit?

FOX reporter Paul Blume drove the ramp later in the day. There was still a bunch of snow packed against the small shoulder. He guessed that it might have served as something of a ramp to send the truck flying.

"If snow is 2/3's of height on the barriers, we'll go out and remove snow," said Mark Fischbach, an MNDOT Official. "Did it last week. Completed the task."

MNDOT'S bigger worry on Tuesday was black ice. The unsuspecting slick conditions were to blame in multiple accidents and crashes. The state patrol responded to nearly 200 calls in the metro region, 16 involving injuries.

Fortunately, none were considered serious, including Anne Spiess, the pick-up driver who at last check was miraculously in fair condition at regions hospital.

"We noticed the majority of accidents today were with SUV type vehicles with high centers of gravity. I think people get overconfident in driving those vehicles and may lead them into more trouble than you think," Fischbach warns.
