Assemblyman Mike Gatto stands at a podium at the LA Police Station. He looks into a line of cameras and says "If you know something my family begs you to come forward."
Gatto, some members of a his family, local council members, the Mayor and others are standing in a LAPD conference room. Mayor Garcetti says "There's $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Joseph Gatto's killer."
Police are not giving much in the way of details except to say that 24 hours before his body was found - November 13th in his Silver Lake home - 78 year-old Joseph Gatto was shot to death. Killed with a single bullet. To Silverlake Councilman Tom LaBonge, Joseph Gatto was a bright spot in the community for his work as an artist and co-founder of the LA County High School for the Arts. Gatto also created unique jewelry some of which detectives believe was stolen by the unknown killer.
From the podium Councilman LaBonge says "And, here in the City of Angels there's a devil out there and we want to find that devil."
Next, Chief Charlie Beck says "I need the public's help."
Both hope that $50,000 reward will help flesh that "devil" out. Says Beck, "I need people that know about this – and, there are people that know about this – to come forward. If you have somebody you think may have been involved please contact us."
The Chief say on the same day as the murder a man broke into a car and when a neighbor confronted the man the suspect pulled a gun and threatened to kill him. Says Beck, "that occurred on the same day, in the same neighborhood as the murder of Mr. Gatto." Making this the suspect in that incident a "person of interest" in the Gatto case.
Back to the family … they're call for help… Joseph Gatto's daughter Marianna says "Certainly nothing can ever replace our father, but we want to prevent this tragedy from happening to another family. We want to prevent someone as dear as our father being stolen from them."
