Renewed push by law enforcement for blue alert system

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

There's a push by Arizona law enforcement to start using the blue alert system.

Blue alerts which are similar to an amber alert, send out a warning to residents after an officer has been shot.

Police hope the warnings would lead to the quick capture of the shooter.

The renewed interest in the system comes following the recent shooting of Phoenix Police Officer Scott Sefranka and a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office volunteer posseman following an armed robbery.

Both men remain hospitalized and three of the four suspects are in custody.

Law enforcement officials hope a state lawmaker will address the blue alerts in the upcoming session.
