Police caution residents after string of South Side robberies

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Police are warning residents in the South Shore neighborhoods to be vigilant after a spate of robberies there over the past month.

Since early December, "numerous" robberies have been reported in the area between 74th and 75th Streets, from Yates Boulevard to Coles Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said.

In most of the incidents, a group of three people have approached individuals, with one suspect physically assaulting the victim while two other suspects empty the person's pockets, according to a community alert from Area Central detectives.

The suspects are described three black men or boys, ages 10 to 24, standing anywhere from 4-foot-11 to 6-foot-1, weighing between 90 an 160 pounds and having either dreadlocks or short hair, the alert said.

Anyone with information on the robberies is asked to call detectives at (312) 747-8380.
