PHOENIX -

A Mesa man claimed the $1 million Mega Millions prize from the drawing on Christmas Eve.

Audel Acevedo is the second person to win the $1 million second prize with a ticket sold in Arizona since Mega Millions was redesigned in October.

According to the Arizona Lottery, Acevedo purchased his Mega Millions Quick Pick tickets at the Fry's Food Store near John Wayne Parkway and Smith Enke Road.

Acevedo had a lot of family visitors during the holiday and forgot about the tickets.

A few days later, he remembered the tickets and took them to the store to be checked.

The clerk told him he had to redeem his ticket through the lottery and assumed he had won about $1,000. It was only at the lottery office that he discovered he had won the $1 million prize.

The Arizona Lottery states Acevedo works in construction and plans to spend his winnings by giving back to the community, investing in property and to try taking his family to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
