PHOENIX -

It was a very close call for an off-duty Maricopa County Sheriff's deputy Tuesday morning after a shot was fired in his direction while he was inside his vehicle.

The bullet came dangerously close and this happened around 7 a.m. right in the midst of the morning commute.

The suspect was on the loose for hours after firing towards the deputy.

The intersection of 35th Avenue and Yorkshire was closed to traffic as Phoenix Police investigated the shooting.

"We believe there were in fact, fragments of glass or something that injured him in the face area," said Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

The driver's side window of the deputy's black Toyota was shot out and police say the suspect fired at least one shot towards the car Tom Beckley was driving.  The 32-year-old is a six year veteran with MCSO and was rushed to an area hospital after police say glass fragments hit his face.

"The condition of the deputy right now is good.  He's recovering from his injuries.  At this time, we do not believe he was struck with a bullet," said MCSO Sgt. Brandon Jones.

Phoenix Police say it all started in the area of 37th Avenue and Saint John.  The deputy was dropping off a relative who accompanied him to work when the two spotted a suspicious vehicle parked illegally.  The vehicle took off and the deputy followed.  About two miles north in the area of Barons and 35th, this is the area where police say the alleged suspect opened fire -- evidence of the incident remained in the street.

"I feel that if anybody is going to shoot at a police officer, they will not think twice about shooting anybody.. that's you know, what concerns me," said Dawn Moren, an area resident.

Residents of the neighborhood where the shooting occurred worried about what happened -- grateful for the deputy for taking action, even if he was off the clock.

"A police officer.. a deputy is never off duty, they're always on duty, always there to protect the public, no matter when or what time of day it is," said Jones.

The deputy was armed, but police say he did not fire his weapon.

At this point, police don't have a suspect description.  Police are hoping anyone with information might come forward.
