PHOENIX -

A hiker who discovered a dog shot and left for dead gives him a home just in time for the holidays.

It's unclear who wounded the pit bull near a hiking trail, but he's healthy now -- and he's making the perfect gift for the family who rescued him.

"This is probably going to be our best Christmas," said 10-year-old Jessica Davis.

She doesn't need to ask Santa Claus for anything, because she already got 2-year-old Elijah -- a Pit Bull her mother rescued in October.

"As a family, we like to celebrate Christmas as a free gift that God has given us to be saved and it seems rather poignant that he actually got saved and he is our Christmas gift," said Andi Davis.

While hiking in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve, Andi found Elijah with a bullet in his shoulder.  She carried the 47 pound dog down the mountain and took him to the Arizona Humane Society.

"At the end of Hatcher.. at the peak is where I found him and now we're on Hatcher adopting him and bringing him home for good," said Andi.

"And he's just such a joy in our lives," said Jessica.  "He's our family dog.  He completes our family."

The Arizona Humane Society let the Davis family foster Elijah for weeks and on Tuesday, they decided his health was good enough for him to become their permanent pet.

"He's our Christmas present," said Jessica.

Before getting to know Elijah, the Davis family feared Pit Bulls.  Now they can't imagine their pup belonging to anyone else.
