Phoenix police have arrested a man in the death of a dog that was kicked and thrown before it died.

Sgt. Steve Martos says witnesses reported seeing the 1-year-old pit bull collapse on the ground in front of an apartment complex near 19th Avenue and Mountain View after it was kicked and thrown Thursday night.

The man arrested on suspicion of one count of felony animal cruelty was identified as 30-year-old Mark Baxter.

Police say he told them he was "aggravated" with the dog and kicked it "with some authority" to make the dog go away.

Baxter was booked on one count of animal cruelty, which is a class 6 felony.

It's not immediately known whether Baxter has an attorney.
