“Bridgegate” Goes National

Posted: Updated:
Fort Lee, New Jersey (My9NJ) - The ongoing “bridgegate” debacle regarding the unannounced Fort Lee lane closures to the George Washington Bridge back in September has now turned into national story and a federal case that could lead right to the Governor’s office.

In fact, this whole situation may even result in the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey breaking up.

The latest bill proposed by Senator and chair of the Commerce Science and Transportation Committee, John D. Rockefeller of West Virginia, has asked for a full investigation into the Port Authority by the Secretary of Transportation.

In addition to that, New Jersey’s Senator Loretta Weinberg is also introducing a resolution to congress which includes possibly breaking up the bi-state agency.

Since congress created the Port Authority, only congress can break it up and look at the transparency issues, the government’s issues and look at whether or not Governor Christie actually had anything to do with the closings as a possible political payback for Fort Lee’s Mayor not backing him for reelection.

Now the National Democratic Party and senators from other states are getting involved with this possible scandal.

During Christie’s press conference surrounding these closures, the governor basically dismissed the whole idea of political retribution essentially stating that two Port Authority workers have now stepped down and rehashing the fact that the closures were a result of a traffic study.

Charles Stile with the Bergen Record chimed in on how this story has blown up to become this big national news story. “It started out looking like one of these kind of New Jersey parochial stories and it does still have those elements, but as this thing has unfolded, it’s kind of telling sort of an unsettling narrative about Christie or potentially because we don’t have all the facts in yet so I don’t want to declare it as fact, but the fact of the matter is, this is creating a new narrative for Christie as the nation starts to tune in and consume more information about this guy. And what they’re seeing is a counter narrative potentially that says Mr. post-partisan is not very partisan, he’s playing a kind of Nixonian approach to dealing with democrats,” he said.

Ironically, the GWB is not in the best shape. The bridge is constantly congested with cars causing major traffic delays even without lanes closed. Just yesterday lanes were closed down because of a pothole, and a few weeks ago a portion of the bridge just fell off leaving a hole in the ground.

Should all this energy being put into finding out who called for the lane closures actually be put to better use like fixing the safety concerns of the bridge?

StubHub, which is a website that provides services for buyers and sellers for tickets to sporting events, concerts, and other live entertainment events, has been hacked. StubHub is getting a lot of bad press, but the site is really the victim here. The hackers have hacked accounts from other sites, and then used that information to get into the StubHub accounts.
