Target won't stock Beyoncé's new album

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

When Beyoncé's new album came out in a surprise midnight release on iTunes last week, it sold more than 600,000 copies. That upset big box retailer Target, according Simon Vozick-Levinson, a senior editor at Rolling Stone magazine. He said Target gets mad when artists give exclusives to iTunes or other download retailers.

Target released a statement reading: "At Target we focus on offering our guests a wide assortment of physical CDs, and when a new album is available digitally before it is available physically, it impacts demand and sales projections."

Vozick-Levinson said this is a longstanding policy. Target also skipped selling Frank Ocean's album last year, which dropped on iTunes first.

So, if you don't want to download the album on iTunes and instead want a hard copy, you can always go to Walmart, which will carry Beyoncé's new album come December 20.
