Local man wrongly convicted of murder to be set free

(WJBK) -

Detroit police have been working this case for two years now and say all the evidence indicates Elroy Jones did not commit this crime, and they're hoping he gets released very soon.

"We definitely don't want the wrong person locked up for a crime," says Dep. Chief David Levalley of Detroit police.

But that appears to be exactly what happened to the 34 year old. He's spent seven years of his life behind bars convicted of murdering a man inside this now-vacant apartment building in 2006. He could've spent the rest of his life in prison if it hadn't been for the work of Detroit police.

"Officers brought the information to me that they had interviewed somebody and received some information that led them to believe that we may have the wrong person," says Levalley.

And the right person is still on the streets.

The investigation uncovered a case that many say was handled all wrong. And thanks to the hard work of investigators, Jones attorney and statements from eye witnesses a judge overturned the conviction.

"Sometimes there are wrongs and if you find a wrong you want to correct it," says Sgt. Michael Russell of Detroit police.

Despite the fact that this conviction is overturned, Jones is still in jail. He could even face a new trial. His attorney is hoping that doesn't happen and that Jones will, instead, be released sometime in January.
