Letter Arrives 67 Years Later

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, CA -

A mystery letter appears at a California home more than six decades after it was sent.

The letter was addressed to Agnes R. Smith and was written by a former Secretary Of The Navy, James Forrestal, in February 1946.

However, Smith no longer lives at that address, and no one knows where she went or if she is still alive. Her former home is located in historic Point Richmond, an area populated by thousands of workers who toiled at the Richmond Shipyards during World War II.

Mildred Dornan, of The Point Richmond History Association, received the sixty seven year old mystery letter.

"I have addressed this letter to reach you after all the formalities of your separation from active service are completed," Forrestal wrote in the letter. "I have done so because, without formality but as clearly as I know how to say it, I want the Navy's pride in you, which it is my privilege to express, to reach into your civil life and to remain with you always."

Dornan says that the lost letter will be a part of Point Richmond's history until smith or any family members claim it.

"We refer to it as the mystery letter because we just can't figure out where it has been for 67 years," she says. "I would hope that somewhere that she's found, so she can get this letter."

According to USPS officials, the letter originally arrived in November and it didn't look like it was re-sent recently. They could not explain how it arrived 67 years late, so the mystery remains as to where it's been all this time.
