Vigil held at apartments where EMU student was found dead nearly one year ago today

"A year ago today was the last day I went and had lunch with her at work; last day I got to see her; last day I gave her a hug; the last words I said to her was 'I love you."

Little did Jennifer know that would be the last time she'd speak to her twin, 23-year-old Julia Niswender.

Police say that night someone made his or her way into the EMU student's off-campus apartment at the Peninsular Place in Ypslilanti and killed her. Julia was discovered in her bathtub December 11, 2012. Authorities say the cause of her death was asphyxiation associated with drowning.

"Sick, knowing that person who did this could still be right here, could be watching, could be planning another attack on a poor victim. It just makes me sick," Kim Turnquist, Julia's mother, says.

Tonight was the first time Julia's family has been back to the apartments where she was killed. They held a candlelight vigil to honor her memory and remind others about what happened, hoping to generate new tips for investigators and eventually the arrest of the person responsible.

Police have since stepped up patrols in the area of Leforge Road, which has been in the spotlight over recent months. EMU football player Demarius Reed was shot and killed at a nearby apartment complex, and here at the Penisular Place apartments another young woman was hit by stray gunfire while she was sleeping.

Those who gathered at Julia's vigil Monday night want the violence to stop before another young, promising life like Julia's is taken.

Jennifer says, "It's like a part of me is gone. A part of me went with her."
