Road Crews, First-Responders Prep For Snow And Offer Tips

Posted: Updated:
MIDDLETOWN, Pa. -

While the possible snow and ice are not here yet, authorities say you should already have a plan.

They're already hard at work making sure you're safe Sunday.

We all know that feeling we get right before the snow comes down. We grip the wheel a little harder and ask, "What will the winter driving conditions be like?"

FOX 29'S Dave Kinchen checked in with the experts to give you everything you need to know to stay safe on the road.

While PennDOT crews prepped their trucks to do their part before and during the weekend winter blast, first-responders at the Middletown Township Fire Co. in Delaware County got ready for their workload.

"It certainly becomes more slippery with the ice and snow conditions," said Fire Marshal Alan Mancill.

His team doesn't want you in the next crash they see. But they know the calls will come in.

"Sometimes we'll run 20 to 30 calls a day in this township during storms," Mancill said.

So, here's what you need to know to survive.

"You'll want First Aid kits, jumper cables, chains, salt, kitty litter, and a shovel is certainly a great thing to carry in inclement weather," he said.

And, yes, they practice what they preach, arming their rigs with a snow plow among other critical tools when that call comes in.

"We'll use these (chains) if the snow gets above two or three inches," one of the first-responders said.

And they know what happens when people don't take their advice.

"We've certainly been to our fair share of accidents through the years," Mancill said.

The fire marshal also says make sure you have a cell phone with rechargeable batteries along with a blanket if you get stranded, Kinchen reported.
