TX School District Holiday Rules Clash With Law

Posted: Updated:
FRISCO, TX -

A Texas state representative is fighting for students at one elementary school after a new state law allowing religious holiday parties gets put to the test.

State representative Pat Fallon says an angry parent whose child attends Nichols Elementary in Frisco, TX forwarded an email stating the new rules for the annual school winter.

The rules came in three parts:

  1. No reference to Christmas or any other religious holiday is allowed.
  2. No red or green, or Christmas trees.
  3. Nothing allowed that will stain the carpet.

"I agree with number three, but not one and two," said Fallon. "We're celebrating Christmas, so why can't it be a Christmas party or maybe a holiday party? But they've skipped over holiday and go to winter, that's political correctness gone too far."

Fallon co-authored Texas' new "Merry Christmas Law." Governor Perry signed it into law earlier this year. It allows students and staff at schools in Texas to say merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, and happy holidays.

However, school officials say that their party rules are not a district issue and will therefore stay the same.

One parent understood the school's motive, but still agreed with representative Fallon.

"The kids that are used to saying Christmas they should be able to say Merry Christmas and the one who doesn't want to say Merry Christmas don't say it, say it your way," said parent Rosie Ciullo.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
