Reports: Hackers Steal 2M Passwords To Facebook, Twitter, Others

Online media reports indicate hackers have stolen usernames and passwords for nearly two million accounts on popular email and social media websites.

The reports are attributed to a cyber-security firm called Trustwave, and the data breach is being blamed on a virus.

Trustwave researchers released details on Tuesday but say they first uncovered the breach back on Nov. 24 and notified the companies.

The most affected company was Facebook with credentials found for 318,000 accounts. Others were Gmail/Google/YouTube, Yahoo, Twitter, Automatic Data Processing and LinkedIn, along with a Russian social network. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and remote desktop login details were also among the swiped account information.

At least three of the companies told Money.CNN.com that they have reset passwords for users with compromised accounts.

Also troubling about the information unearthed by Trustwave was the simplicity of passwords many are still using, including simple counting numbers. For example, more than 15,000 were "1235456," and about 2,000 others simply used "password."

A large number of passwords were brief and used just one type of character, such as letters only or numbers only.

Technology expert Anthony Mongeluzo was on Good Day today to give consumers some advice. Anthony emphasized that people must run virus scans on their computers to clear the virus. Simply changing your passwords will not stop the virus if it is on your computer.
