Thanksgiving travelers ready to hit the road

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

AAA predicts that 43 million Americans will be traveling this week for the Thanksgiving holiday, and many of them will take off on Wednesday to hit the road.  They say that number isn't down much from last year, but gas prices are low in metro Atlanta—which means more people will be out on our roads.

In fact, we haven't seen gas prices as low as they are now at Thanksgiving since 2010.  Georgia Department of Transportation spokesperson Natalie Dale says that means many families will get in the car to go see other family members in other places, for both Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Maybe you're planning to take to the skies instead—via the world's busiest airport?  AAA predicts 90 percent of Thanksgiving travelers will be driving, while 7 percent have booked flights and 3 percent will travel by train, bus or cruise ship.  No matter how you get to your destination, there's always some skill involved in the planning. Some told FOX 5 it's best to go early, while others suggest waiting until Thanksgiving morning—when others have already gone where they're going.

To help ease the pain on the roads, GDOT canceled road construction from Wednesday at lunch until Sunday night.

The average distance traveled this week is about 600 miles.  AAA says the top three activities are visiting family and friends, eating and shopping.

There are also somber numbers to go along with the holiday.  Georgia typically sees about 3,000 crashes and 12 deaths during this travel period, so please be careful and stay alert while you're driving.
