TEMPE, Ariz. -

The rain disappointed a lot of high school football players and fans Friday night -- the semi-final playoff games were canceled because of the rain.

10 playoff games set for Nov. 22nd have all been postponed until Monday due to the weather.

The head of the Arizona Interscholastic Association told us muddy fields are a safety issue, but many parents and players are not happy.

Harold Slemmer, AIA's executive director, says he made the decision to postpone the playoff games after he saw all of the water on McClintock High School football field in Tempe.

"It really tears the field up and by the time the 1st quarter is over, it is just a big mud block," he said.  "I think for most parents, they realize what we are doing.  They realize that we are trying to make it safe and fair for everyone and I think they are they going to enjoy watching the game in better weather and better field conditions on Monday than they would this weekend."

But some teams, like the Deer Valley Skyhawks, were scheduled to travel out of town.

"We have got friends and family. We have pre sold tickets. We have so many people and 400 students set to travel down there.. then they cancel and reschedule to Monday and that's not convenient to the student body and friends and family to take off of work yet again," said Jennifer Dillard, a parent.

The finals are set for next Friday, so if their team wins Monday, these parents also worry about the players' recovery time.

"Tuesday they are going to have no sleep.. they are going to have a very light practice.. you have Wednesday.  No school Thursday, it is Thanksgiving and then we are all supposed to leave on Friday for a game," said Carrie Burkholder, a parent.

Bottom line, Slemmer says this decision is all about safety.

"It is a kind of a no win scenario. We believe that playing under these conditions clearly creates a risk.. clearly creates more problems for kids and coach.  We feel like we need to solve this problem immediately and we will look at the other one as we get down the line."
