Police: Friends used wood to save teen shocked by downed power line

Detroit police say a 14-year-old was injured after he touched a live electrical wire the morning after strong storms knocked down trees and power lines across the state.

Police say the boy was walking home with three friends from Burns Elementary that was closed due to power outages when the group came across a downed power line. The younger boys were able to get underneath it, but the 14-year-old tried to move the line out of the way.

Capt. Anthony Topps of Detroit police says when the boy touched the line, the friends grabbed a piece of wood and pried the electric wire from the boy's hand. He says if it weren't for the quick thinking of the friends, the teen's injuries could have been more severe.

The principal at Burns Elementary also came to the rescue when he saw what happened when he was in the process of putting orange cones around the area.

Emergency crews also responded and were able to transport the boy to Sinai Grace Hospital, where he was still listed in critical condition Monday. He has since been transferred to Mott Children's Hospital at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Tuesday afternoon he was still listed in critical condition.

Police are not yet releasing the victim's name or photograph.

Sunday's storms left more than 600,000 homes and businesses across the state without power.
