Golf is a big industry in the valley. There are courses everywhere, and people come from all over the country to spend time on the greens. But the game of golf may be going through some trouble. Recent studies show golf lost five million players in the last decade.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. -
Lockheed-Martin says it will close its plant in Goodyear, eliminating 600 good paying jobs in the west valley.  It's all because of a cutback in defense spending, but it's going to hit the city hard.

It's one of the top employers in Goodyear.  The facility takes up nearly 500,000 square feet of space near the Phoenix-Goodyear airport.

The company develops military sensors and other communication software, but by early 2015 the company says it's closing doors for good there.

It's the nation's number one military contractor.  Now Lockheed-Martin officials are blaming federal spending cuts for its decision to slash 4,000 jobs -- many of those jobs right here in the valley.

"We knew the bomb was going to fall just when..." said Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord.

Lord says the aerospace giant is one of the main employers in the city.

"The foremost in the minds is jobs.  We've been building jobs and doing a great job of it for the last number of years and when you don't have cooperation from the federal level, it's tough."

A Lockheed-Martin spokesperson told me 600 jobs will be affected here at the Goodyear campus.  It's unclear if all those people will be laid off or is some of those jobs will be relocated.

Lockheed-Martin will shutdown the Goodyear facility by early 2015, eliminating or moving jobs that develop military sensors and communication equipment.

In a statement, Lockheed-Martin CEO Marilyn Hewson says, "In the face of government budget cuts and an increasingly complex global security landscape, these actions are necessary for the future of our business and will position Lockheed-Martin to better serve our customers."

"This is what sequestration means.  This is hurting the biggest industry.  Arizona has aeronautics, aerospace, defense.. definitely," said Lord.

Plants in Ohio, Texas and Pennsylvania will also close and many of the programs based here in the valley will move to Denver, Colorado or Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
