BYE-BYE BLOCKBUSTER: Close-out sales begin Thursday

Posted: Updated:

If video killed the radio star, it seems the Internet killed the video rental store. Thursday will bring the end of an era in Minnesota as Blockbuster begins selling off its rental videos before closing for good.

For those who still prefer to rent a flick, options are growing fewer these days. Although there are still a few stores to be found, a well-known chain will be closing fast.

"It's sad to see it go. It's going to be weird to come get my coffee and not see the Blockbuster next door," Nancy Iverson, who helped bring Blockbuster to the state, said.

The blue and yellow sign has been a staple in Uptown since the 90s, but the store is now ready for a fire sale. The plan is to sell off all the inventory as they get ready to close up shop.

"It's still kind of a sad swan song," Iverson said. "It's been a big brand."

Iverson has a lot of fond memories of bringing 30 stores to the area, creating movie memories for families across the Twin Cities.

"There's a lot of memories we have associated with movies; so, to have a store you could walk through and see all that was a great thing," she said.

Over the years, Blockbusters have been blacking out their stores due to RedBox and other online movie purveyors. When the doors open on the liquidation sale, it'll be the last visit for many movie buffs.
